Living low fat used to do my head in

Back in the day I hunted down “low fat” everything. Because I thought it was good for me (read: I thought it was good for my arteries). It did my head in. Big Time.

But is it really better for me…? What am I asking…?

Just because cholesterol is sometimes found in the arteries of those surviving (or not) heart attacks, does presence mean cause? For example, a fireman being present at a fire doesn’t correlate to him/her/he/she causing the fire. Similarly, a police officer present at the scene of a crime doesn’t mean they caused the crime.

One doesn’t always mean the other.

I obsessed – like the food manufacturers wanted me to – about the full fat % in each thing I bought.

It did my head in. Big Time.

Choosing Not to De-Nature

These days, I no longer live that way. The transition from low fat to full fat, mentally, was hard work. Probably because I’d spent so many years (decades?) in The Low Fat (denatured) Food System.

The constant chatter going round and round in my head was how bad I was … how unhealthy I was. Learning to silence and/or switch that voice off took quite a bit of energy.

Now I’m a Full Fat Girl: Full Fat Greek Yoghurt (The Collective Epic Greek Full Fat is my favourite) and Mainland Tasty Cheese. Alan’s favourite yoghurt is The Collective’s Vanilla Bean Epic Greek.

Yes! Each of these brands are much more expensive than their low fat competitors. But you know what…? We’ve found we don’t burn through them as fast as the low fat versions.

Why? Because they’re more filling. Their satiety value is much higher. Which means although it costs more at the checkout, we’re not visiting said checkout as often. Which means, in the long run, we’re saving money.

With Alan being away my evening meals are very simple. Last night was a 3-egg omelette made with tasty cheese and full fat milk, followed by a few spoonsful of The Collective’s Unsweetened Epic Greek yoghurt.
